“Istros” Publishing House of the Museum of Brăila “Carol I”
Editura Istros | Muzeul Brăilei „CAROL I“
Founded in 1995, the „Istros" Publishing House of the Museum of Brăila “Carol I” has published until now more than 600 books. For some people, it could be much, for others, could be less, but “Istros” Publishing House had no intention to compete with institutions specialized in publishing books. To carry on the traditions of the “Istros” bookstore, the publishers have begun with the results of their own researches. We considered also our duty to republish the “Analele Brăilei” Journal.Through the anastatic edition, Museum of Brăila “Carol I” reminded the community that, at Brăila, has existed, since the inter-war period, a journal of regional culture. Founded in 1929, the journal was the first publication to popularize the real values of Brăila by a number of names, real landmarks in the Romanian culture: Nicolae Iorga, George Călinescu, Dumitru Panaitescu - Perpessiciusetc. It became our duty of honour to continue “Analele Brăilei". Studies, materials and heritage items carefully selected have constantly filled the pages, so, very soon, we went beyond the well-known aspect of a journal, having often more than 300 pages. There are a few county or regional museums with a collection of Ph. D thesis so impressive like “Istros” Publishing House of the Museum of Brăila “Carol I”. Many of these authors – collaborators or researchers of the museum – are candidates or awarded with national or international prizes. Seventeen of the books published by “Istros” have received awards from the Romanian Academy: Valeriu Sîrbu, „Credinţe şi practici funerare, religioase şi magice în lumea geto - dacilor", 1993 (“Nicolae Bălcescu" Prize of the Romanian Academy, in 1995); Ionel Cândea, Brăila. „Origini şi evoluţie până la jumătatea secolului al XVI-lea", vol. Another distinct field of “Istros” is to publish art albums which present reproductions of the most famous artists of Brăila. The first two albums have been published a few years ago and they presented to the public reproductions of the works of two graphic art collections, Nicăpetre and Gheorghe Naum.
As one can see, our Publishing House is one of the means through which Museum of Brăila “Carol I” meets its public and highlights at the same time the local and national cultural heritage. „Istros" publishes the results of the researches made by the specialists of the Museum of Brăila “Carol I” and collaborates with authors of other institutions from Romania and abroad. Our collaboration with the Publishing House of the Museum of Romanian Literature was fruitful, as we could initiate the study of Vasile Băncilă fund, and more than 3000 pages written by the famous philosopher of Brăila have been published.
The “Istros” Publishing House became famous over the years; therefore its name appeared together with the Romanian Academy Publishing House on the cover of books appreciated in Europe, making this way our Museum well known beyond Romania’s borders.
“Istros” Publishing House is now and will continue to be one of the most powerful instruments in promoting nationally and internationally as well, the image of the Museum of Brăila “Carol I” and Brăila County, but also the image of Romania.
